6WHEN WATERS RUN HIGH...

Nope, it’s not an outhouse! This is the building that houses the stream gauge.

The Alvinston stream gauge is one of 11 in the watersheds of the St. Clair region; it is operated by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA). The Sydenham River watersheds are areas that catch rain and snow, and then drain into the Sydenham River. A stream gauge measures the water level in the river and keeps track of the water level over time. The gauges are connected to computers at the SCRCA office in Strathroy.

The information from gauges (like this one) is used to help predict two things: when floods will happen, and how much flooding there will be. This is particularly important for Dresden and Wallaceburg, which are on flatter land. Many houses and businesses would be damaged by the flood waters.
