17THE GREAT ENNISKILLEN SWAMP

The Great Enniskillen Swamp was once "…a vast forbidding expanse of timbered swamp..." Today the Great Enniskillen swamp is only remembered in history books. The last physical reminders of its existence are the flat clay soil and the many kilometers of drainage ditches.

Enniskillen is a township in the center of Lambton County. Since the land is so flat water tends to sit in one place, instead of flowing. This results in a swamp. It is an area that is covered in trees and is soaked with water for most of the year. The water in these areas is for the most part one big pocket of standing water.

The Great Enniskillen Swamp once covered 150,000 acres. It covered all of Enniskillen and stretched into the townships of Brooke, Dawn and Sombra. Travel through the swamp was almost impossible and the standing water made the area a breeding ground for mosquitos, which carry disease. Many settlers near the swamp became ill with malaria.
